The USS Coldbrook, a 5,104 ton 390 foot diesel-powered steel-hulled cargo steam ship, was wrecked on June 16, 1942 off Middleton Island in the Gulf of Alaska. Remarkably, Middleton Island rose 4 metres (12 feet) during the massive Alaskan earthquake on 27 March 1964. Today she sits stranded on a beach that was once a reef. A pair of Bald Eagles as well as hundreds of Black-legged Kittiwakes now nest on the rusting ship.
