25th February 1601: On this day in history a little before 8am Robert Devereux, 2nd Earl of Essex was beheaded on Tower Green within the walls of the Tower of London. It took three strikes with the executioners axe to remove his head! He was buried within the Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula. He had once been a favourite of Queen Elizabeth I and interestingly his great grandmother was Mary Boleyn.

Her godparents were Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, Catherine Courtenay, Countess of Devon (daughter of the late Edward IV) Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury (daughter of the late George, Duke of Clarence) and Agnes Howard the Duchess of Norfolk.
