1848- A large quantity of gold is discovered in northern California & thousands of often violently ambitious men pour in to dig it up. Over the next decade, 80% of the "timid & friendly" native population is killed off. In 1850, California will be annexed to the United States as a free state, angering the southeastern slave states.
Gold Rush | The diggers looking for gold in Australia. Opposition to the Chinese mining claims and prospecting was widespread and it is well documented that the Chinese, who did not usually contest their status on the fields, were generally left to work over areas that European miners had already worked. They often found rich sums of gold on these leftover claims by working more meticulously which angered the European diggers even more.
