This graphic uses geographic shapes with contrast in color and font size to draw the eye to the most important messages. Large, bold numbers hit home for viewers when they realize the stark contrast between how many people and living things depend on the ocean and how little of it is protected. Although alarming and visually striking, this graphic does not provide a call to action.

Second, it conveys numbers in different ways, including a pie chart, a bar chart, and a pictogram. This variety prevents the reader from being overwhelmed by numbers while still visually emphasizing the scale of those numbers. Third, it relates the issue into real dollars and cents, showing the average cost to the Canadian taxpayer.

More of an impression is made by showing consumers a visual of the environmental impact they make in their everyday lives, and the amount of change it is possible to make in a year.
