Part of Margiela’s right amount of wrong and one of his most requested vintage collections, is seen in his infamous play with proportions. The ingenuity of his 2000 Oversize collection, size 78 IT, isn’t just in how he reworked massive traditional shapes with scientific precision, but also in the details on the fringe of the collection. Literally, the fringes were a visually epic example of how Margiela consistently challenged fashion’s preconceived notions of style and beauty. Vivienne Westwood 1994 Fall, Vivienne Westwood Fw 1994, Vivienne Westwood Fall Winter 1995, 90s Fashion For Women, Ann Demeulemeester 90s Campaign, Short Sleeve Coat, Vivienne Westwood Fall 1994 Ready-to-wear, Tulle Shirt, Frayed Denim Jacket

Exuding insouciant cool, Alexa Chung wore hers with a brocade Céline skirt and flats, the moment Bella Freud credits with making Je T’aime Jane ‘into a thing’. Emma Watson and Rosie Huntington Whiteley are also Birkin fans.

Tabi boots and shoes came in all shapes and sizes, creating a cult loyal following akin to Rick Owen’s Geobasket trainers with all the codes and tropes that unite its members. Obviously Margiela didn’t create the tabi, but he definitely owns it. Since it first walked down the runway in 1989 Margiela’s Tabi design has never been copied. Twenty-eight years later vintage Tabis are hard to find and in high demand. And the more distressed the better. But there’s more to Margiela’s shoes than the Tabi Short Sleeve Coat, Frayed Denim Jacket, Tabi Boots, Cut Out Jeans, Printed Silk Skirt, Walk In My Shoes, Sheer Bodysuit, Single Breasted Coat, Playsuit

Paris in 1968 was a fun place to be, and if your name was Sonia Rykiel, it was especially groovy. “1968 was the beginning of the hippie movement in fashion…It was not necessary to be always dressed up. You could be dressed the way you wanted – it was absolute freedom.” With the spirit of a generation beneath her wings, Rykiel opened her first boutique in the bohemian heart of Paris, Saint-Germain-des-Prés on the Left Bank. Cool young things gravitated to the store, attracted by the gamine of Fall Style Guide, Vintage Runway, Resort Fashion, 1970s Fashion, Sonia Rykiel, 60s Fashion, Fashion Website, Mode Vintage, Blazer Fashion

In the age of Instagram, slogans in fashion have become ubiquitous , but in the ‘70s saying it on your sweater was seriously new. Imagine the hype when Sonia launched her ‘sensuous’ sweater in 1971. This bold move earned her the title ‘Queen of Knits’ thanks to a very favorable write up in style bulletin WWD the following year. Art imitated life in 1994 when Sonia Rykiel made a cameo appearance in Robert Altman's film about Paris fashion week, Prêt-à-Porter. Altman was actually inspired to make the movie after attending one of Rykiel’s fashion shows, and the one of the main characters Simone Lowenthal (played by Anouk Aimee) was based on her.

Moments That Made Sonia Rykiel. It seems crazy but all it took to kickstart Sonia Rykiel’s covetable career in fashion was a simple sweater. Picture this, it’s1962 and flame haired, heavily pregnant, 30-year-old Rykiel couldn’t find anything to wear that was up to her exacting sartorial standards. Her then-husband ran a fashion boutique, so she called up his contacts at an Italian factory and asked them to make her a tight, ribbed stretch knit jumper. The white lab coat is synonymous with Margiela, recently given new meaning by Galliano as a sartorial mark of respect to the distance, anonymity and craft that Margiela created; a far cry from Galliano’s Dior rock star status. But it’s Margiela’s Flat collection shown in 1998 that brought the lab coat and 2D clothes to life. In true Margiela style, a demonstration of defiance against the fashion industry’s obsession with a singular view of pretty vs Margiela’s pretty ugly.
