My evolving PLN|PLE #xplrpln

An attempt to compose a narrative of my evolving PLN / PLE. As I've mapped via platform, each appears self contained and mutually exclusive but they're not - there are common people across most of these networks with interactions across multiple platforms.

Work network - people I currently work with. This includes people in my immediate team, people in other teams within my business unit (Organisational Devt), employees within the business, and people external to the organisation - like contractors, vendors, and other L&D practitioners. Anyone who works has a work network - people you either work with directly on specific projects / tasks, or get support or information from to do your job. Social network can develop from personal chat.

G+ - although been on this for about a year, rarely used until #xplrpln. Up til then, only had a few random friends in my 'circle' and didn't understand the value or what or how to use G+. Am discovering it is a good place to develop and tap into specific communities. I've always enjoyed forums for the opp to discuss in more depth so am liking G+ for the same reasons. Now using to develop #xplrpln PLN but also lurking erratically in #cicmooc community.

Blogs & blogging- impetus to create a blog was (again) #DS106. Also inspired by Harold Jarche (PKM), Julian Stodd (whose conversational, narrative style I like) and Matt Guyan (ex-work colleague who'd started blogging). Amazed to discover an immense blogging community - & wordpress does a great job of cultivating this by making it easy to set up, follow, find, like and comment on others' blog posts. I've discovered blogs are a medium for exploring & connecting with ideas in more depth.

Twitter - had a twitter account since 2009 but not used til 6 months ago. Primary impetus: #DS106. I'd known for a while there was a global L&D community there but until actively using it didn't realise what an awesome tool it was for discovering resources, ideas, inspiration & people. It quickly became a timesink of serendipitous learning opportunities. It’s my connection to the global learning community: 'big ideas', thought leaders, leading practitioners, & innovative communities…

LinkedIn - joined in 2011 and until I became active on twitter 6 months ago was my primary professional learning network (outside of my immediate work network). I consider this my 'local' online PLN/PLE, as mostly Australian connections. Am a lot less active now in Group forums, but still scan my feed fairly regularly and comment on relevant shares from connections. Also good for scoping job opportunities and keeping a pulse on people and orgs in the Australian eLearning / L&D market.

Now, this is probably more a purely social network than a PLN. On FB since 2009, but never been very active on it. This is pretty much my 'baby' network now - to keep in touch with who's having them, what they're up to, comment on how cute they are, and share the occasional parenting tip. It does include some ex-work colleagues and friends in related industries but professionally relevant shares are pretty rare. I primarily consume rather than share here.

"People I know" - this is everyone's first PLN/PLE, and one that just develops organically, without really having to do much to cultivate it. Most people probably don't think of "people they know" as part of their PLN. But I take the view that any network of people you learn stuff from (personal or professional) is part of your PLN. And I see this as my extended personal network, who I learn general 'life' stuff from.
