Queen Anne's Pocket Melon (Cucumis melo), in the American South it was more often called the vegetable pomegranate, later shortened to pomegranate. Even later, that was corrupted into, “plum granny”, by those whose speech patterns hail from the Appalachians. It gives off an unforgettable perfume. Victorian women carried these tiny melons in their pockets in the days before aerosol deodorants. Velvety skin has jagged orange & yellow stripes; thin white flesh is edible but bland.
