Dr Catherine Hamlin is an Australian surgeon and practitioner who opened the Addis Ababa Fistula Hospital in 1974. She has treated more than 35,000 women suffering from obstretric fistula, which can occur during severe or failed childbirth. Dr. Hamlin, who celebrated her 90th birthday this year, has been nominated for the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize.

Albert Namatjira was the first indigenous artist to paint and exhibit professionally in Western style. He painted his country and was both prodigious and successful, producing approximately two thousand pictures and founding a school of painting that continues today.

Albert Namatjira born Elea Namatjira, was a Western Aranda-speaking Aboriginal artist from the western MacDonnell Ranges in Australia. As one of the most prominent Aboriginal artist of the time, he was a pioneer of contemporary Indigenous Australian art.

Cathy Freeman was born in Mackay in Queensland in 1973. She won a sports scholarship to boarding school where she was able to have professional coaching. Freeman is the first Aboriginal sprinter to win a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games (1994). She also won a silver medal in the 1996 Olympic Games. She was made Young Australian of the Year in 1990 and Australian of the Year in 1998.
