The priory church of Saint-Vert Not much is left of the fortified priory of Saint-Vert, now a very small village in the département of Haute-Loire in Auvergne (central France).   The oldest part of the church is the nave (including the apse), built in the 1100s. The gorgeous doorway is part of that. Other than that, most of the church has been redone in later centuries.

Eglise de Laizé - Saône et Loire L’église de Laizé en Mâconnais présente un chevet de style roman lombard fort original. C’est l’église d’un ancien doyenné des moines de Cluny qui possédaient également le donjon voisin du Château de la Tour. L’église fut largement remaniée aux 18e et 19e siècles, quand la nef du 12e siècle fut agrandie et presque entièrement reconstruite. Le pignon de la façade, avec ses trois baies, est encore roman. Souillac After the wonders of Moissac, I drove back North 125 kilometers to the small town of Souillac, back in the département of Lot but still in the old province of Quercy (and in the modern region of Occitania). According to unconfirmed local stories, the abbey of Souillac was founded by Saint Éloi († 660) before it was taken over by the Benedictines from Aurillac in the 900s. From that period, only the Western tower-porch remains.   Less famous than Moissac, this abbey was, for me, a
Abbey of St Mary, Souillac, Lot, Occitanie Romanesque sculpture or trumeau from the 12th Cent. The sculptures are now inside the church but were originally outside in the portal of the west door. The trumeau shows fabulous animals, and lions fighting other animals on its outer side. At the top, a man is being eaten by one of the beasts.
