The legible form of Northumberland emerges against the grey Melbourne sky as construction continues on site. Nestled within the historic industrial heartland of Collingwood, Northumberland is a neighbour to both our local studio and another JWA project - Holme Apartments. . The project encompasses a trio of buildings each with their own distinct variance in height, materiality and form. An external colour palette of bronzes, reds and umbers amplify the brick colourings that are found on site and

Designing in lockdown has delivered challenges but also great rewards. Over the past seven weeks working from our homes, we've successfully undertaken intensive stakeholder engagement workshops and the initial design stages of four projects for The University of Tasmania. ⠀ .⠀ Like so many, we've had to adapt and incorporate new technologies into our daily routine. We've swapped our pinup wall with Miro, a shared virtual whiteboard, for our daily design reviews. We've used Microsoft Teams for

We're delighted to have three projects shortlisted in the Australian Institute of Architects Victorian Awards 2020!⠀ .⠀ Holme Apartments are inspired by the immediate context of the silos that once dominated Collingwood’s skyline. Scalloped balconies sweep around the perimeter with the concave form representing the negative mould of a silo. Original brickwork of a 1920’s art deco style brick warehouse has been maintained and extended upon to create the tower's podium. ⠀ ⠀ 📷1-2 @melbournepho

This week our founder John Wardle became the proud recipient of the Australian Institute of Architects’ 2020 Gold Medal - the Institute's highest honour.⠀ ⠀ It was a very happy day, with our team watching the announcement together from homes and workstations across Melbourne and Sydney. Their applause and excitement echoed back to our Collingwood and Surry Hills studios bringing a bright and very welcome ray of sunshine in these uncertain times. ⠀ ⠀ We’ve been inundated and quite overwhelmed
In our 7th week working at home and still continuing our efforts to bridge the social and technological distances between staff, we're also reminiscing about another bridge - one we made during our most recent Bruny Making weekend. . Our team was tasked with making a stone step bridge. As an end to the COVID-19 lockdown beckons, leading design thinkers have started asking questions about what our homes, offices, cities and universities might look like in the post-COVID-19 world. While we currently have more questions than answers, thinking strategically about how we design the spaces we work, live and gather in has never been so critical. We'd like to introduce you to some endangered plant species, known in regions of Victoria that have been severely impacted by the recent bushfires. Commersonia dasyphylla, known by its Indigenous common name Kerrawang, is recognisable for its pinkish-white star shaped flowers, and the cotton like hairs that cover its leaves. Indigenous groups are known to have used the fibrous bark from this unique Australian native for making string, itself used for weaving baskets and other handicrafts.
