The spin of the Earth is slowing (very slowly) mainly due to the effect of the moon’s gravity. Just as the moon’s gravity pulls at our oceans as the planet rotates (creating tides), so too does it act as a drag on the Earth’s spin, meaning our days are gradually getting longer. This is why we have to add a leap second to our clocks every few years, and why the T-Rex experienced a 23 hour day. #dinosaur #trex #jurassic #science #physics #gravity #moon #space

New Zealand was the first country to grant women the right to vote in 1893, with Australia following closely in 1902 (Indigenous women and men did not get the vote until 1962). The last country where women still can’t vote to this day is the Vatican City. While the right to vote has come a long way there are still many places where both men and women either can’t vote or their vote counts for nothing (for example people ‘vote’ in North Korea…) #suffragette #vote

Charles Lindbergh made the first solo nonstop flight across the Atlantic in 1927, instantly catapulting him into a stratosphere of fame no one had quite predicted, becoming arguably the most famous man in the world at the time. The reception Lindbergh received upon returning to America is mind boggling even by today’s fame loving standards. Lindbergh was honoured with a parade in New York City and greeted by an unprecedented 4 million people! #history #flight #CharlesLindbergh

Marie Curie, the renowned physicist and chemist, was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the first person to win it twice. Curie undertook ground-breaking research on radioactivity. The level of radiation Curie was exposed to was so strong that over 100 years later her notebooks must now be kept in lead-lined boxes and those who handle them must wear protective gear. #science #radioactive #womeninscience

Margaret Hamilton standing next to listings of the Apollo Guidance Computer source code – the on-board flight software that got man to the moon. A female software engineer at the time was a pretty rare sight, but that didn't stop Hamilton from leading the team that developed the software for the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. Hamilton was later given NASA's Exceptional Space Act Award for her work. Hamilton also coined the term 'software engineer'. #womeninscience #Apollo11 #margarethamilton…
