Last year NASA released over 2,500 new images of Mars. This one of dunes in a crater is one of my favourites (the red bar is left over from image processing).

Did you see last night's supermoon? The moon appeared 14% bigger and 30% brighter due to it being both a full moon and at its closest point to Earth on its elliptical orbit. The last time a full moon was this close was in 1948, and we won't see it again until 2034. If you missed it last night you'll still get a pretty impressive show tonight! Here is a snap by Nicholas Eagar of the moon looking over Sydney Harbour to the Opera House. #supermoon #space #moon #NASA #Sydney #OperaHouse

Margaret Hamilton standing next to listings of the Apollo Guidance Computer source code – the on-board flight software that got man to the moon. A female software engineer at the time was a pretty rare sight, but that didn't stop Hamilton from leading the team that developed the software for the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. Hamilton was later given NASA's Exceptional Space Act Award for her work. Hamilton also coined the term 'software engineer'. #womeninscience #Apollo11 #margarethamilton

The spin of the Earth is slowing (very slowly) mainly due to the effect of the moon’s gravity. Just as the moon’s gravity pulls at our oceans as the planet rotates (creating tides), so too does it act as a drag on the Earth’s spin, meaning our days are gradually getting longer. This is why we have to add a leap second to our clocks every few years, and why the T-Rex experienced a 23 hour day. #dinosaur #trex #jurassic #science #physics #gravity #moon #space

It’s a big one this week as we delve into the beginning of everything with a look at the Big Bang Theory. How did the universe as we know it come into existence from supposedly nothing? And why? China recently launched the world's first quantum communications satellite, the Quantum Science Satellite (QUESS). The aim is to test sending secure messages over large distances using quantum entanglement. Unlike regular satellite signals which can be easily intercepted, signals sent using quantum entanglement cannot be hacked, potentially heralding an era of unhackable global communication. This diagram by @newscientistofficial nicely demonstrates how it works. #quantum #science…
