It’s a big one this week as we delve into the beginning of everything with a look at the Big Bang Theory. How did the universe as we know it come into existence from supposedly nothing? And why? Margaret Hamilton standing next to listings of the Apollo Guidance Computer source code – the on-board flight software that got man to the moon. A female software engineer at the time was a pretty rare sight, but that didn't stop Hamilton from leading the team that developed the software for the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. Hamilton was later given NASA's Exceptional Space Act Award for her work. Hamilton also coined the term 'software engineer'. #womeninscience #Apollo11 #margarethamilton

How cool is this periodic table showing where the elements come from? Only two are from the very beginning of the universe (hydrogen and helium). Most of the elements that make up the human body, like carbon and oxygen, were made by nuclear fusion inside stars (we are the stuff of stars!), and a bunch of elements are made by humans (i.e. only detected in human made lab conditions). #science #elements

Marie Curie, the renowned physicist and chemist, was the first woman to win a Nobel Prize and the first person to win it twice. Curie undertook ground-breaking research on radioactivity. The level of radiation Curie was exposed to was so strong that over 100 years later her notebooks must now be kept in lead-lined boxes and those who handle them must wear protective gear. #science #radioactive #womeninscience

Did you know you can store data on DNA, just like a regular hard drive? Makes those old floppy disks look so quaint. Check out the latest post for a look at how this works, link in bio. #science #technology #data #dna #floppydisk
