When I started meditating,I couldn't for the life of me do this. By the time I caught myself observing my thoughts I had done the shopping list, planned a holiday, ...all in under 5 seconds. It was very frustrating. Now, with a bit of mindfulness practice, I have moments where I can see where my thoughts are going, I can watch them or I can choose to steer them in a different direction.
