June 1915 - Churchill Speech in Dundee: ‘Through the Dardanelles Lies the Shortest Path to Peace’ Pictured - An Australian recruiting poster, The French government had more or less ceded.

2nd Lieutenant Elwin Bruce Olifent  27 Battalion, Australian Infantry, Australian Imperial Force (AIF)  Enlisted on 25 February 1915 and sailed for the Middle East on 31 May. After a period in Egypt in July -August 1915, he was posted to the Western Front.  Lt Olifent was commissioned in the field during the Battle of the Somme on 10 August 1916, but was killed in action, aged 29 at Flers on 5 November 1916. He is commemorated on the Villers-Bretoneux Memorial.

Gallipoli is a 1981 Australian film, directed by Peter Weir and starring Mel Gibson and Mark Lee, about several young men from rural Western Australia who enlist in the Australian Army during the First World War to fight against the Turkish army.

The statue of the Australian diigger at the end of Anzac Bridge in Sydney, stands opposite a statue of a New Zealand digger.  I am always driving when I cross this bridge so I can't take a photo--so glad to have this one.
